Description

This 24-hour Leadership Academy event helps leaders develop their leadership skills through the lens of a civil service experience, in this case the experience of rebuilding rail franchising.

By the end of the event, you will have:

  • explored a challenging case study alongside your peers, using it as a springboard for reflection and learning
  • reflected on the complex, unique and changing environment of the civil service and your role within it as a shaper and leader of change
  • deepened your awareness of your own ways of thinking, doing and feeling, and how these can impact on your team, your organisation and the people around you
  • considered how you can use some of the latest leadership and learning thinking to improve your leadership practice
  • extended and deepened your relationship with your peers and joined a cohort of senior leaders collaborating for the future
  • identified your own learning needs, and those of your organisation, with a view to acting on these insights back in your day job

An opportunity for reflection

The Leadership Academy immersive learning series is sponsored by Defra Permanent Secretary Clare Moriarty. The series helps leaders develop more effective leadership practice through participation in experiences that are built around genuine civil service case studies.

At the heart of the Civil Service Leadership Academy is the belief that we learn best when we:

  • are supported to decide for ourselves what learning is most useful to us rather than having it imposed on us.
  • learn from experienced leaders who have a real understanding of our work.
  • are encouraged to explore different ways of leading in a safe space.

Immerse yourself in a lived experience

On 27 and 28 February we will be learning from the experience of leading people through the rebuilding of rail franchising.

This workshop is sponsored by Clare Moriarty, Permanent Secretary at Defra, who will share her experiences of living through this as Director General, Rail Executive in the Department for Transport. The case study will be facilitated by Ruth Kennedy and Dr Perrie Ballantyne from ThePublicOffice.

This immersive event will address the key question: how do we balance the thinking, feeling, and doing of leading in circumstances of real pressure and complexity? The event will give you the space to reflect on how you ‘think, feel, and do’ as a civil service leader. There’ll be plenty to get your teeth into, senior colleagues from across the civil service to learn alongside, and lots to carry back into your leadership practice. This event is designed to be highly practical: the intention is for the learning to be high impact for you as an individual and as a shaper of the civil service.
